conclusions at present, no single diagnostic procedure is able to cause damage to the embryo or fetus. there are possible harmful effects for doses above 0.2 - 0.25 gy (20-25 rad). context many women of reproductive age and pregnant women require diagnostic tests involving ionizing radiation. fetal exposure to radiation worries both the patient and the obstetricians and could lead to inappropriate termination of pregnancy. evidence acquisition to conduct this review of the literature pub-med was searched. retrospective studies, reviews of literature, multicentric epidemiological case control studies were reviewed. official data base reprotox and the teratogen information system teris were also consulted. results standard diagnostic x ray tests including those of the lower abdomen imply that the dose absorbed by the uterus is in any case less than 0.05 sv ( = 5 rad). the majority of the studies in literature estimates that 1-2 rad fetal exposure may increase the risk of leukemia of 1.5 - 2.0 over the natural incidence, meaning that 1 in 2,000 children exposed to ionizing radiation in utero will develop leukemia in childhood.

Prenatal X-ray exposure and rhabdomyosarcoma in children: a report from the children's oncology group.

The association between antenatal diagnostic X-ray exposure and risk of rhabdomyosarcoma in children was assessed in a national case-control study of 319 rhabdomyosarcoma cases and 319 matched controls. Data were collected by telephone interviews of subjects' parents. Overall, an odds ratio (OR) of 1.9 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.1-3.4] was found for any X-ray examination of the mother dur...

Quality assessment of conventional X-ray diagnostic equipment by measuring X-ray exposure and tube output parameters in Great Khorasan Province, Iran

Introduction: Regular implementation of quality control (QC) program in diagnostic X-ray facilities may affect both image quality and patient radiation dose due to the changes in exposure parameters. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the status of randomly selected conventional radiographic X-ray devices installed in radiology centers of Great Khorasan Province, Iran, to produce the da...

A paediatric X-ray exposure chart

The aim of this review was to develop a radiographic optimisation strategy to make use of digital radiography (DR) and needle phosphor computerised radiography (CR) detectors, in order to lower radiation dose and improve image quality for paediatrics. This review was based on evidence-based practice, of which a component was a review of the relevant literature. The resulting exposure chart was ...

X-ray pulsars: a review

Accreting X-ray pulsars are among the most luminous objects in the X-ray sky. In highly magnetized neutron stars (B ∼ 1012 G), the flow of matter is dominated by the strong magnetic field. The general properties of accreting X-ray binaries are presented, focusing on the spectral characteristics of the systems. The use of cyclotron lines as a tool to directly measure a neutron star’s magnetic fi...
